South Dakota faces a pressing workforce crisis. With 30,000 open positions and a shrinking labor force due to baby boomer retirements, the challenge is compounded by birth rates that fail to replace the diminishing workforce. Without action, future shortfalls in our labor force will deepen the crisis, straining businesses and communities alike.
Freedom’s Haven is actively addressing this gap by bringing legal immigrants to South Dakota. We educate employers on the critical need for New Americans and provide practical solutions to integrate them into our communities and workforce.
Freedom's Haven volunteers have facilitated the relocation of many of the 800 Ukrainians who have moved to South Dakota.
We've connected employers with New Americans to fill critical open positions.
Created extensive, detailed web-based tools to help communities successfully resettle New Americans.
Solved employment delays caused by slow federal work permit processing.
Opening critical transportation jobs by translating the CDL exam into other languages.
Partnered with recruiters to help employers find and hire New Americans.
There are an estimated 300,000 Ukrainians in the U.S. who are dissatisfied with where they’ve landed. Attracting just 3% of them to South Dakota would add 9,000 workers to our labor force. Additionally, by engaging Native and Indian populations, supporting other legal immigrants, and addressing systemic barriers, we can build a stronger, more diverse labor pool.
